Newfoundland and Labrador offers an excellent quality of life, including one of the lowest crime rates in North America. Campus Security at all of Memorial’s campuses always strives to make student, staff and faculty’s safety a top priority. On the St. John’s campus the student union offers WalkSafe and SafeDrive, two free services that help students arrive at their destination safely at night. How can I get to St. John's? How much does it cost?

You can get to Newfoundland by land or air.

If you are traveling by air, Air Canada and WestJet provide daily flights to the province from major Canadian cities.

If you are traveling by land, Marine Atlantic operates a year-round ferry service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Channel Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. For quicker access to St. John’s a summer ferry service operates between North Sydney and Argentia, Newfoundland. Argentia is about an hour and a half drive to St. John’s.

The weather is moderate in St. John’s. Winters are generally temperate with an average temperature of -5 degrees Celsius. In the summer months the temperature ranges from cool to hot, with an average of 20-23 degrees Celsius.

St. John’s is an urban city with lots to do. We have two major shopping centres and St. John’s is legendary for its entertainment. Restaurants and night clubs line the cobblestones of George Street with Irish, country, dance, rock, jazz, blues and traditional music. From biking, hiking, boating and cross-country skiing to an array of arts and cultural events, there are activities to suit all. Where is Memorial University located?

Memorial University is located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador on the east coast of Canada. The University has four separate campuses: St. John’s, Marine Institute, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, and Harlow. The St. John’s and Marine Institute campuses are located in St. John’s; Sir Wilfred Grenfell College is located in Corner Brook and the Harlow campus is located in Harlow, England. The Harlow Campus does not offer full degrees, but instead allows students of the St. John’s and Grenfell campuses to complete a semester abroad.

How close is the airport to the campus?

If you are studying in St. John’s at the St. John’s Campus or the Marine Institute, you will want to arrive at the St. John’s International Airport. St. John’s International Airport is only minutes away from both campuses. A taxi can take you to both campuses for a flat rate between $20 & $30. The airport code for St. John’s Airport is YYT.

What can I do on the St. John’s campus?

Students on the St. John’s campus have many services available to help them become, both inside and outside of the classroom. Answers, International Student Advising Office, Native Liaison Office, Counselling Centre, Student Health Services, and the Glenn Roy Blundon Centre are just some the many services available to students on campus. Students also encouraged to get involved in the 100+ clubs and societies on campus. Every semester you will be required to pay a recreation fee which will give you access to The Works, the largest recreation facility in the province. Included in your recreation fee is the Field House Recreation and Athletics facility, the MUN pool, squash courts, the Strength and Conditioning Fitness Centre and outdoor fields.

Answers is a front line service center offering students quick access to important services such as their Campus Card (ID Card), locker rentals and student loans. They also offer information about campus life, referrals to other university services and a friendly face to help you find what you are looking for.
