What type of housing does Memorial provide?

Memorial provides two different types of on-campus housing, Paton College and Burton’s Pond Apartments which are residential complexes located at the eastern edge of Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.

Paton College residences are a combination of 10 houses. Paton College holds approximately 1000 students in both co-ed and single female gender living. Double rooms are available for new students of Memorial, while some single rooms are available for returning students. Students must choose from a mandatory meal plan of 10, 14 or 19 meals per week.

Burton’s Pond Apartments hold a total of approximately 512 students, in 4 buildings. Each building has multiple apartments where four students, each with their own private bedroom, share the kitchen, living room and bathroom. A meal plan is not required, but students can request to opt-in to the meal plan.

All on-campus housing is completely smoke free.

Do you guarantee on-campus housing?

Offers are given on a first come-first served basis. Preference is given to first year students attending Memorial University or the Marine Institute. Acceptance to On Campus Housing is ongoing throughout the year. If you are accepted to On Campus Housing, you will be notified by both email and regular mail.

What is the Application fee?

An application fee of $40 is required for each option of housing for Fall/Winter application. This fee is non-refundable, non-creditable, and non-transferable. A $20 application fee is required for Winter Only and Spring/Intersession/Summer.

Can I have a single room?

There are a limited number of single rooms in each residence, in Paton College. Single rooms are generally given to returning students on the basis of a point system. First-time residents will be assigned to a double room upon acceptance. If you require more information on this policy please contact the housing office at housing@mun.ca. All rooms in Burton’s Ponds Apartments are single rooms.

How much is on-campus housing?

Do I need to be accepted to the University to apply to housing?

No, it is not necessary for applicants to wait for admission to Memorial University before applying for On-Campus Housing. Early submission of the applications is encouraged to increase your chance of an early offer. To apply online to On-Campus Housing visit www.housing.mun.ca and click on the "Online Housing Application" button.

Will I have to sign an Occupancy Agreement?

All Students who move into On-Campus Housing in the fall must sign a two semester occupancy agreement for the fall and winter semesters. This agreement includes the acceptance of the rules governing student housing, a meal plan (if applicable), and the authorization to charge a cancellation fee. Permission to withdraw from On-Campus Housing will only be granted in the case where the student has been required to withdraw by the institution they were attending.

Do I have to buy a meal plan if I live in Residence?

The purchase of a meal plan is mandatory condition of residing in Paton College. Meal plans are available in 10,14, or 19 meals per week. The “All-you-care-to-eat” meal plans offer a wide variety, including well balanced and healthy options at each meal. We also offer vegan and vegetarian menus. Residents of Burton’s Pond have the option of purchasing a meal plan. However, each apartment is equipped with a refrigerator and stove for you to prepare your own meals.

Can I live with a friend or Boyfriend/Girlfriend?

Unfortunately, all rooms and four-person apartments are single gender only. Indicate your preferred roommate(s) if any. We will assign you with requested roommates if possible. Please note that if you request roommates, it is imperative that those roommates have requested you on their application as well. If this is not the case, your roommate requests may not be met. We will do our best to accommodate all requests.

How close is residence to my classes?

All academic buildings are within a five to ten minute walking distance of your residence. Most of the Paton College residences are connected to the campus tunnel system or are only a short distance from a tunnel entrance. Residents of Burton’s Pond can access the tunnel system from Hatcher House. The MUN tunnel system is useful during bad weather and most of the winter months.

Are there any additional expenses when living in residence? i.e. Telephone?

Yes, arrangements for telephone services must be made personally with your telephone service provider. Housing, Food and Conference Services accepts no responsibility or costs for these arrangements. You should also be aware that all students are required to pay “in-house fees” each semester to help cover the cost of house programs and events. These fees are payable to the house executive on the first day of registration in cash only and receipts will be issued by executives on that day.

What should I bring with me to residence/apartment?

In order to make your stay with us as pleasant as possible we suggest that you at least bring along the following items. All correspondence from the Housing Office, bedding, items to personalize your room (pictures, posters, etc.), toiletries and towels, soap, soap dish, laundry bag/detergent, alarm clock, other items for personal hygiene and care. All apartments are furnished; however, we do not supply bedding, dishes, cutlery or cookware such as pots and pans. We suggest you bring along the following items: all correspondence from the housing office, bedding, items to personalize your apartment (pictures, posters, etc.), towels, cutlery, dishes, cooking utensils, laundry bag/detergent, alarm clock, other items for personal hygiene and care.

What happens between semesters?

If you have a valid academic reason to remain beyond the normal closing time, we will do our best to accommodate you. Accommodations must be arranged by the established deadline by emailing housing@mun.ca. It is your responsibility to ensure that you receive confirmation from Housing that we have received your request. The break rent charge will be on a daily basis and for your convince will be charged to your university student account. This charge is non-refundable. Students may be requested to move rooms/houses in between semesters provided your request has been approved.

How big is a room in Paton College/Burton’s Pond?

A double room in Paton College is 9 x 12 with two single beds, a desk and a study chair for each person. There are built in shelves and closet space for each person as well. A bedroom in Burton’s Pond is 8 x 10 with a single bed, a desk and chair. Burton’s Pond rooms also have shelving and closet space available.

How many courses should I be registered for to be considered a full time student and thus be eligible for housing?

You must be a registered full time student to reside on campus. A full time student is anyone who is registered from at least 9 credit hours. Most courses are worth 3 credit hours, so usually you will be required to take three courses or more.
