How do you become a Varsity Athlete?
Coaches recruit players throughout the year, but there are still opportunities for athletes that are not recruited. Open tryouts in all sports usually occur during the first week of classes in the Fall semester. Students interested in participating can also contact the head coach of the team they are interested in and discuss playing opportunities. Athletes should be prepared to send in game tapes to the coach. To get coach contact information please contact Lynn Taylor at the Varsity Office, 709-737-8682.
How much will it cost to participate in Varsity Athletics?
All AUS (Atlantic University Sport) competition for Varsity Athletes is funded by the University. Athletes are not required to pay fees to participate in Varsity programs. Athletes may be required to participate in fundraising activities to help fund exhibition travel depending on the team and in general Athletic program fundraisers. Athletes are also expected to participate in community involvement activities and in Varsity special events.
How will participating in Varsity Athletics impact my academics?
Participation in Varsity Athletics requires a big time commitment. Athletes usually spend 20-25 hours per week training and competing. This commitment requires that athletes be even more committed to their academics. Athletes will be required to travel to compete and occasionally leaving on Friday or returning home on Monday which may result in missed classes on those days. The Department of Athletics provides athletes with a letter to be presented to each professor at the beginning of each semester that outlines the athletes travel and practice schedule. This letter helps the Department deal directly with professors in the case of athletes missing class for travel. Coaches of all teams require athletes to be committed to their academics if they wish to continue to play.
